The Mayor of Gary sucks at math.

May 7th, 2008 · No Comments · Politics

With Hillary Clinton’s statewide lead under 40,000, the pending results from Lake County loom large.

While Clinton reportedly led voting in cities like Hammond, Whiting and East Chicago, Gary Mayor Rudy Clay is indicating a huge margin in favor of Obama in his city.

“It’s very lopsided,” Clay said, pointing to a hand-written list of precinct results.

According to his numbers, in most districts Clinton’s turnout in the city of Gary was near non-existent. One precinct saw 126 voters turn out for Obama, while only four voted for Clinton.

Clay said the election is seeing a record turnout in the city.

“We’re used to having maybe a 22, 23 percent turnout for a primary. We’re seeing numbers as high as 85 to 95 percent,” Clay said. “The Gary people took care of business.”

Moments ago we got the final numbers and Obama only led by 10% in the Gary area. Amusingly, it took until the last minutes prior to the final results for the state coming in for Clay’s crazy prediction to fail. He was on CNN live as those results came in and you could actually hear the hope drain from his voice.

And so Gary, IN returns to only mattering in high school performances of The Music Man

In the end, Clinton carries Indiana by a couple of points - which she can spin as another “come from behind” win if she tries really hard, but it’s a hell of a squeaker victory. Obama wins North Carolina by between 12 and 14 points depending on the source, which is a strong showing but also shows a weakening similar to what Clinton weathered in Pennsylvania when compared to stronger support predicted in recent weeks.

Thus, the show goes on.
