Obama: Math is hard.

May 10th, 2008 · No Comments · Politics

According to Obama, we apparently now have fifty seven states:

Now, I expect that this will be explained as him (poorly) delivering a joke about how much he’s had to travel during the campaign, but I can’t help but agree with the argument that if McCain made a similar statement it would be relentlessly flogged as an example of him being senile/confused.

I view this as being just like McCain’s “Iran/al Qaeda” flub from a few weeks back. These candidates are filmed 24/7 and any slip of the tongue or poorly executed gag gets jumped on by the opposition. I usually give ten of fifteen interviews a month - which is a fraction of what these folks do EVERY DAY - and there’s rarely one that goes by without me saying something that’s either awkwardly worded, easy to misinterpret or flat-out wrong. As a result, I don’t believe that McCain is confused about Iran’s ideological alignment any more than I think Obama is confused about how many states we have.

Now, that obviously won’t matter in this or any other campaign, but I do always feel a twinge of sympathy when I see something like this on camera.
