Secretary Clinton?

October 22nd, 2004 · 4 Comments · Politics

An “insider” claims the former president Bill Clinton has his eyes on the position of Secretary General of the United Nations once Kofi Annan’s term ends in 2006.

“He definitely wants to do it,” the Clinton insider said this week.

A Clinton candidacy is likely to receive overwhelming support from U.N. member states, particularly the Third World. Diplomats in Washington say Clinton would galvanize the United Nations and give an enormous boost to its prestige.

I’m no huge fan of the way the UN is currently run, but putting Clinton at the helm would be a pretty good first step towards turning it into something credible. If he winds up getting the job, I suggest we change the title to “President of the World” just to drive whatever lunkhead wins the upcoming election batty.

clinton can’t be secretary gen’l, unfortunately.

the scgen has to be from some other country than the 5 biggest nato members.

I’ve never heard that. I know that candidates must be recommended by the Secuirty Council, but I’m not aware of any restrictions regarding NATO members. It would seem odd to use membership in an unrelated organization as grounds for disqualification, though.

There’s been discussion for some time now about the next SecGen coming from North America at the very least and likely America in particular. Even if there IS a rule that would prevent Clinton’s service now, it’s a stone-cold lock that the UN members would make sure to change the rules as needed to make way for Bill.

According to some sources, Clinton had evidently been considering the SecGen position as early as February of 2003.
