Dear Eminem.

October 26th, 2004 · No Comments · Art, Politics, Rants

I owe you an apology. When I said I thought you were “apparently unaware of when the presidential election is actually taking place,” I had no idea you were going to release what may very well be the best mix of popular art and intense political advocacy I’ve ever seen.

When the “Mosh” single was released a few weeks ago, I listened to it and was, to be honest, fairly unimpressed. It seemed plodding, redundant and trite. With the exception of a single “fuck Bush” in the middle, it didn’t strike me as the being the “aggressively political” track we’d been promised in pre-release hype.

But the video for “Mosh” is exceptional. It improves, clarifies and amplifies the song the way that - by my estimation - only Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video has ever done before. It’s really that good.

“Mosh” is timely and powerful in ways that make the efforts of other artists in this election seem meek and trivial.

So mea culpa, Mr. Shady. To make up for it, I’ll be sure to buy your album on the 16th.
