Some crackpots have paid the Smithsonian Institution $16,000 to have their “Intelligent Design” movie played in the museum’s Baird Auditorium.

The Discovery Institute, a group in Seattle that supports an alternative theory, “intelligent design,” is announcing on its Web site that it and the director of the museum “are happy to announce the national premiere and private evening reception” on June 23 for the movie, “The Privileged Planet: The Search for Purpose in the Universe.”

The museum, he said, offers its Baird Auditorium to many organizations and corporations in return for contributions - in the case of the Discovery Institute, $16,000.

I am sorely tempted to scrape together that kind of cash and get them to host a presentation of Manos, the Hands of Fate.

In not-terribly-related news, National Geographic has released the results of an interesting poll about extraterrestrial life. Not surprisingly, religious people are substantially less likely to believe that we are not alone in the universe (46% versus 70% of “non-believers”). Because… ya know… God created the INFINITE EXPANSE OF THE COSMOS and left it empty just to fuck with us.

I honestly think I’m going to start scribbling the Drake Equation inside the front cover of the Bible in every hotel room I stay in from now on.
