The Aristocrats.

June 18th, 2005 · 1 Comment · Art, Movies

Every now and then, you come across something so… ya know… weird that you wind up somewhat obsessed with it. The Aristocrats joke is one of those things.

In short, The Aristocrats is a sort of post-modern exercise in excruciating ANTI-humor. Usually only enjoyed by “in the know” comics, it’s a decades-old exercise in offensiveness that is (depending on your moral fibre) either the world’s FUNNIEST gag or the single most offensive thing ever to spring from mortal minds.

Regardless, I’ve spent the past few days digging up different versions of it and - I must say - it’s goddamn fascinating. And I’m not the only person who thinks so.

Penn Jillette and Paul Provenza have made a movie about it. The list of comedians involved is… well… staggering. Literally EVERY, SINGLE LIVING COMEDIAN I’ve EVER found to be amusing is in this movie. ALL OF THEM.

Chris Rock, Drew Carey, Eddie Izzard, Harry Shearer, Steven Wright, Robin Williams, George Carlin, Andy Richter, Bill Maher, Billy Connolly, Lewis Black… and on and on and on. I mean, sweet Zombie Jesus, Paul Reiser, Bob Saget and CARROT TOP are in it. Carrie Fisher is in it. Princess fuckin’ Leia tells this joke.

So, clearly, my new mission is to see this movie. I MUST. And you should too. Otherwise, we’re all just a bunch of fuckin’ marks.
