Man fron Nantucket, you disappoint me.

October 22nd, 2006 · No Comments · Misc., Rants

I was catching up on some month-old Colbert Report episodes when a reference to the old “there once was a man from Nantucket” gag came up. It occurred to me that my estimate of the humor of this reference was based entirely on implication, and not any ACTUAL knowledge of what the rest of the limerick actually happened to be. A quick googling later, I find that this was its original (1924) incarnation:

There once was a man from Nantucket
Who kept all his cash in a bucket.

But his daughter, named Nan,
Ran away with a man

And as for the bucket, Nantucket.

Honestly, that’s not even offensive OR funny by Prohibition standards. I swear, if I find out that the Cleveland Steamer was actual a laundromat in Ohio, I’m going to lose my faith in baudy, suggestive jokes entirely.
