The Most Hated Family in America

April 4th, 2007 · 2 Comments · Politics

BBC documentary on the family and followers of Fred Phelps. The host is a little irritating and probably too aggressive (referring to one of the church members as “Brainiac” at one point) and most of it is pretty standard stuff for the group, but the content with the kids is absolutely heartbreaking. They respond to nearly everything with a direct (and clearly coached) response from the Bible.

As a lover of Baltimore, I am disturbed by how frequently the mother says “Hon.”

Louis Theroux is usually quite amicable. Like Sacha Baron Cohen, his thing is getting Americans to say crazy things. But instead of irony and silly accents, his schtick is more gee-whiz sincerity. I remember watching his show, but I don’t recall him ever getting as snippy as he did with these people.

And the guy has interviewed skinheads, for Chrissakes.

I watched most of this when it was aired in the UK- though I turned it off towards the end as it was just too hateful. Theroux is a curious documentary maker. He has made a career of dealing with strange, weird and difficult subjects- from Hells Angels to Natzis, nutters to naturists. His ethos seems to be ‘I’m here to shed light on this strange little corner of the world’ but sometimes he seems complicit, or to goad the subject into a particular vein. I thought this documentary was strongly edited to put the Phelps in a particular light- the girls being his ‘angle’- and its a shame this one does not live up to his previous non-judgemental standards. Mind you, given the behavior of the Phelps- especially their anti-semetic comments- its hard not to loose your cool…
