I am an old man.

Tonight’s episode of The Simpsons seems to have been tailor-made to make the generation that grew up with the show feel unbelievably ancient. I spent half the episode pausing it and explaining how Gag #252 was a reference to a specific interview Weird Al gave in 1993 on Regis and Kathy Lee or how Homer’s band was playing a parody version of a Nirvana song. Even 14 years later, the Teen Angst Monster in me thinks Kurt Cobain jokes are still happening “too soon.”

There’s something deeply unsettling about being caught up in a retcon of this type - where a show that you remember mocking a specific cultural event AT THE TIME IT WAS HAPPENING is now doing a satirical retrospective on that era. Maybe it really HAS been on the air for too long.

I take that back. It was a moment of weakness. PLEASE NEVER CANCEL THE SIMPSONS. If you do, all we have left is Hannity and Colmes and American Gladiators. And the new version of the latter TOTALLY sucks compared to the old one.

Wait… wasn’t American Gladiators FIRST popular in the early ’90s?

Dear lord. I AM old.
