Petraeus Testimony: Q&A (McCain and Clinton)

April 8th, 2008 · No Comments · Politics

We’ll get McCain out of the way first, since his session is basically a series of Surge-Positive leading questions:

Not exactly a “kid gloves” treatment, but certainly no surprising hardball questions either (though McCain’s constant breathing into his mic while Petraeus was speaking was a tad creepy). You can also see him straining at the end to get the answer to “Name That Islamic Faction” correct.

Clinton:

A strong, but not overly-adversarial set of questions from Clinton. She asks the critical question:

What would it take for Petraeus to recommend a withdrawal of troops from Iraq?

Petraeus’ response is pretty much terrible - he opens with a rambling dodge, then finally offers no details whatsoever. His overall response is that “it’s complicated, but we’d know if we saw it.”

I would’ve liked to have seen Clinton actually press him further on the issue.
